Before sunrise, on an insanely hot August morning, I provided makeup for Nancy and her bridal party at her cozy home in downtown Toronto.
Nancy is one of those brides that knows exactly what she wants, by being able to express what she DOESN'T want. I really enjoy when someone is able to give their opinion and communicate exactly what is and isn't working for them. As a makeup artist (or anyone in this type of field), we try to understand and execute someone's vision, but what I am envisioning isn't always on par with the client. It is key for a client to not be shy to give feedback so that the artist can execute what you truly want. At the end of the day, you need to be happy with it!
At first Nancy wanted a dramatic smoky eye (she showed me some of pictures of the Kardashians sporting an all over black smoky eye), and so I replicated that ultra dark and sexy eye makeup. She loved it, but I could tell she wasn't sure if this was going to be THE makeup for her wedding. So I let her know to rock it for the rest of the day and to give me a call in a couple of days to let me know how she felt about it. When I got her call a couple of days later, Nancy let me know although she loved the eye makeup, and I did exactly what she asked, it didn't feel right for the wedding. I let her know that was totally okay! We set up another trial (on the day of her shower, so she was dolled up for an event), and this time without hesitation she knew exactly what she wanted, and sure enough she adored the end result! We opted for a look that was bright and defined, enhancing her features and not making it too heavy. The accent colors in her wedding were soft beiges, creams and warm blush pinks.
While Nancy had defined eye makeup, the bridesmaids had a super soft smoky eye in a warm taupe-y brown. As I've stated before, I like when the bride stands out, and the bridal party compliment her in a uniform look. This does not mean cookie-cutter makeup! A similar color palette is considered and no strong differences are incorporated. The variances are in the depths, highlights, color intensities, and not to forget, each person's features affects the way makeup can look!
Nancy made her home look better than most hotels! Her design taste and keen eye made her home the ideal space to get photos of the pre-wedding arrangements. If you have a beautiful home and can organize it to host the getting ready affairs, as well as photo ops for the details, then do so! It will be 100% you, and what's better than that?!
